In addition to a 78,520-square-foot casino, Delaware Park is home to a beautiful horse race track, located just outside the gaming hall. Designed by William DuPont, Jr., who has twenty-three racing courses, the facility opened on June 26, 1937 and today is the only thoroughbred horse racing track in the state of Delaware. Delaware Park's is also the only mid-Atlantic track to regularly card Arabian races. Racing season runs from April to November.
The Horse Track's Clubhouse makes for an excellent place to watch the races. Inside you'll find several snack bars, serving fast food and other items during the races. The clubhouse is also home to a number of restaurants and lounges. By far, the Terrace Dining Room is the center of clubhouse entertainment. Located on the third floor, the Terrace serves a gourmet menu in a fantastic setting overlooking the track. In fact, every seat in the house offers clear views of the track. There's also a full bar if you simply want to catch a cocktail in style. The restaurant is open on live race days only. Every Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Open 11:00am-4:30pm. For reservations call (302) 994-2521 ext 7306.
Taking the family to the track? One of the best dining options for families is a place called BBQ, located at the family picnic grove, outdoors, next to the clubhouse. Located in the most picturesque area of the park, the restaurant focuses on hearty burgers, ribs, chops and more. Great for private parties too. BBQ is open during horse race season only.
A wager on a horse race is very different than many other forms of gambling. Horse racing payoffs are calculated on a Pari-mutuel basis, meaning that the house (the racetrack) does not care who wins a given race. The odds on each horse to win are determined by what proportion of the total money wagered is placed on that horse.
The "favorite", or the horse with the most money wagered on him to win by the public, will have the lowest odds.
The "longshots" have the least amount of money wagered on them and therefore have the highest odds/biggest payouts.
The racetrack handles the money, keeps a percentage, and calculates the horses' odds based on the public's preferences. The remaining money is then paid back to the players who hold winning tickets. To the racetrack, the result of a given race is usually insignificant. To the wagering public, however, it means everything!
Not only does Delaware Park offer wagering on live racing, they also offer simulcast wagering on tracks from all over the country. On many days we offer over 20 tracks, so this is an important first step in getting your bet down accurately.
