Founded in 1979, the Delaware Theatre Company is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the area. Located on the beautiful Christina Waterfront, the 389-seat Delaware Theatre Company offers a wide variety of performances which constitutes a mix of classic and contemporary plays and musicals. The DTC serves more than 38,000 adults and 5,000 students on a yearly basis, and is a magnificent opportunity to experience art, theatre and culture between visiting nearby modern attractions such as the Christiana Mall or Delaware Park Casino, to name a few.
The Delaware Theatre Company is no stranger to premier performances. Highlights include "Partners" by Allan Katz, "Stinkin’ Rich" by Henry Woronicz, "Wake Up, Lou Riser" by Kia Corthron, and "Open Charge" by Richard Thomsen. In fact, the Delaware Theatre Company has received 8 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia.
In addition to what's happening on the stage, the DTC offers award-winning outreach and education programs. Some of the more popular include the Delaware Young Playwrights Festival (a state-wide playwriting contest for middle and high school-aged students that culminates in professional productions of three winning scripts), as well as regular theatre classes for children and adults, and an acclaimed summer theatre camp called Summer on Stage. Further, the Delaware Theatre Company has been nationally recognized for its work with area youth, including Totally Awesome Kids (a yearly program for developmentally disabled children and adults) and Arts Across the Curriculum at Ferris School, a prison high school in Wilmington.
One of the best experiences you can have traveling while exploring Delaware is to maybe visit one or several the Wimington Delaware Museums, or perhaps take a trip to Longwood Gardens, or play the horses at Delaware Park Casino, and then cap off the evening with a performance at the Delaware Theatre Company.
